I feel like my head is going in 17 directions at a I feel like my head is going in 17 directions at all times, and I just realized I’ve probably been hiding all the interesting parts. At least I think so. I LOVE seeing the process and BTS of what other creators go through to get to their end products, so I’m going to try doing more of that here. I’ve been shooting a lot lately, working on new presets (this takes me forever), making new carousel designs, playing around with film-ish add-ons... and then suddenly decided I needed film borders that work in Lightroom. Not to mention the new Showit website that I’m “working on” 😅 I’m realizing I have a bad habit of going quiet while I’m making things and then coming back when everything is done and pretty, which skips over most of the fun, messy, crazy part. So I’m going to try showing more of what I’m working on while I’m actually working on it, including the stuff that may never see the light of day because some ideas are soooooo much better in my head 😂 Maybe I’m just nosy, but I love seeing how other people’s brains work when they’re making something. Do you like seeing that too?

I think one of the harder things to learn as a pho I think one of the harder things to learn as a photographer is that you don’t always have to make so much happen all the time. Especially when you’re newer, because you walk into a session with all the things you’ve saved in your head. The poses you want to try, the prompts you saw someone else use, the shots you know you’re “supposed” to get. And you’re so busy thinking about what you should do next that sometimes you miss the really good stuff that was already happening. I still guide my families, obviously. I move people when the light isn’t working, I’ll put them somewhere that makes sense, I’ll give them something to do when they need it. There’s definitely intention behind what I’m doing. But I’m also watching all the time. I’m watching how mom naturally holds her baby when I haven’t told her what to do. I’m noticing where the light is falling and what happens when someone moves six inches closer to a window. I’m paying attention to hands and expressions and all those tiny things that would probably mean absolutely nothing to anyone else in the room. And I think that’s the part of photography that took me the longest to understand. You can learn your settings. You can learn posing. You can save a million prompts and study other people’s work until your phone runs out of storage 😂 But eventually you have to stop looking outside of yourself for the next photograph and start trusting that you can recognize it when it’s right there in front of you. That’s what I mean when I talk about learning to see. It’s not some magical eye that a few lucky photographers were born with. It’s paying attention, over and over and over again, until you start noticing things you used to walk right past.
Hot take - the fastest way to make your work look Hot take - the fastest way to make your work look dated is to build your entire style around a trend 😅 Trends can be fun, and I’ve embraced plenty of them (some were very unfortunate 😂) but I really think the photographers who last are the ones who know how to borrow from the trends without relying on them. What’s one trend you love now or have loved, or one you’re really happy is over 😅 😱??
