Something I’ve stopped caring about after 13 years Something I’ve stopped caring about after 13 years of shooting in people’s homes: “Perfect” light. Someone messaged me the other day saying every home she shoots in is dark and awful and she didn’t know what to do, and why do all her clients have no light in their homes?!!! I remember feeling exactly like that. And what I learned is that your clients’ homes are not the problem. You are going to walk into dark homes. Homes with one tiny north-facing window, fluorescent kitchen lights, blinds that are broken and can’t be opened, homes next to a red brick building throwing the worst colour cast back in(ask me how I know this 😅) It’s inevitable. It’s part of the job. And you can still make something beautiful. Stop focusing so much on finding great light. Turn up your ISO and turn your attention to what’s actually happening in the room. The images my clients cry over are never the ones with perfect light. They’re the ones where I caught something meaningful to them. There was a time when I’d stop people mid-action and ask them to move because the light was going up their nose. Now I think, so what??! They’re happy, having fun, full of JOY!!!!It’s ok if the light isn’t what I hoped for, the moment is worth more! **Stop using the lack of great light as a reason to not make great images** Learn how light works, learn to see it, but also learn to see past it… You can make great images ANYWHERE! Have you ever walked into a session thinking omg there’s no light in here. How did it go?
