A good prep guide answers the questions families ask before the session. What everyone should wear, what to do about the kids “bad behaviour”, when they’ll see the photos, how it all works. And the ones they don’t think to ask until they’re already standing in front of you.

I’ve been photographing newborns, maternity, and families for seventeen years.
Over the years I’ve learned exactly what clients need to hear before a session: what to send, when to send it, what to save for after they book, and what makes them feel taken care of from the first email.

I. BEFORE YOUR SESSION
Who you are, how you photograph, and what clients can expect from a session with you. This is where the relationship starts, before any logistics: your approach, the come-as-you-are philosophy, and the feel of working together. Includes a clear walkthrough of what happens from booking to gallery delivery, so nothing comes as a surprise. In-home and studio versions included, as well as outdoor maternity info.
II. Session preparation
Practical prep for the day of the session. Includes checklists clients actually use: what to expect, how to prepare your home for in-home sessions, what happens in the studio, how to approach the session, and notes for including siblings or pets.

The biggest section in the guide. Wardrobe guidance, what to wear and what not to wear, how to coordinate across a family, and specific notes for maternity and newborn sessions. Are the photos included?
The colour, texture, and pattern example images are included for you to use as-is or swap out. Everywhere else, the template uses Canva cloud placeholders where you’ll add your own work.

Does this work for outdoor maternity sessions?

I only shoot in-studio. Is this still for me?
Yes. The template includes full studio versions alongside the in-home versions. Delete the pages you don’t need and keep only the ones that match how you work.

I shoot both in-home and in studio. Do I need to buy two templates?
No. Both versions are in the same file. Customize once, then duplicate the file and delete the studio pages from one copy and the in-home pages from the other. The customization guide walks you through this.

Is this worth it if I only shoot a few sessions a year?
Yes. A good prep guide is what turns a handful of sessions into referrals and repeat bookings. One extra session booked because of a better client experience pays for the template several times over.

Which version should I buy — Family, Newborn + Maternity, or the Bundle?
If you only shoot one genre, get the version that matches what you do. If you shoot both (or plan to), the Bundle includes huge savings over buying separately. Most photographers who shoot newborns also shoot families, so the Bundle is the most common choice.

Is this available everywhere?
This template is not available to residents of Quebec. Since I’m based in Montreal, selling the same guide to photographers in my own market wouldn’t work well for either of us. Photographers everywhere else are welcome.

Can I share this with another photographer?
The template is licensed for individual use only. It can’t be shared, copied, resold, or used to create products for sale. Each photographer needs their own license. If you know someone who’d find it useful, please send them here, your referral means a lot.
